Netflix Retrospective - Jessica Jones Season 3 Episodes 5-6

We’re back with Jessica Jones, last we left off, we knew who our main villain was and Hogarth decided to have some devastating information made public. Let’s see where things go from here.

AKA I Wish

We open with Trish coming to Jessica about their agreed team-up. Sallinger is smart, keeps his finances healthy, no social media and a clean criminal record, but the blood on the money proves he’s a psychopath and he’s got Jessica backed into a corner, so she needs Trish’s help. They need to establish something against him that will stick, and that requires tailing him and getting to know his habits better. Trish is the ace, he may know Jessica but he doesn’t know her.

Sallinger is in his victim’s bathroom, using it as a dark room for developing photos, I think he’s also practicing his acting. He texts his victim’s boss and tells him he’s quitting as his best friend needs him. He’s packed up and it seems he’s leaving the house, complimenting himself on his good work.

Jessica and Trish set up to look at his apartment on a rooftop. Meanwhile Kith is in a right state in Hogarth’s place. Hogarth promises to defend her in court, her son Laurant has come to receive the bad news first hand but it’s not him at the door it’s a distraught Peter who blames Hogarth for everything and… You know what, I side with Hogarth here, you stole from a charity you created in honour of your dead daughter you sick fuck!

Trish sees Sallinger place a photo in a hidden file, which she is ready to break in and get whilst Sallinger is out. Jessica is about to stop her but she cuts the power, disabling the security cameras so at least shows some intelligence. She gets a look at the files and begins saving the photos to her phone.

Hogarth calls Malcolm, warning him that Peter might come to the office, he agrees to lay low and proceeds to disconnect the live feed camera he planted and delete all the footage. Trish meanwhile has finished taking photos of the file, and begins taking other photos of the house, despite Jessica already having those photos.

Jessica watches as Salinger reads a paper on a park bench, he watches a seemingly pointless scene where a guy gets some money from a hooker. He’s actually waiting for Erik and the two talk, I think, Erik then gives money for a rather reluctant hooker who he then drags into the nearby motel. Jessica is now caught between 2 cases and chooses to follow Erik.

So, turns out the hooker in question was Erik’s sister, he plans to use some of the money he’s acquired to get her out and she’s not exactly pleased. Salinger had his eyeballs on her to arrange for Erik to pay him a visit, he wants to know how he was found out. Jessica… convinces her to lay low, I think…

Malcolm and Zaya have a chat on the phone, she can tell he’s holding back and wants to press despite knowing the work confidentiality clause on the work contract. Trish is working with Gillian on one angle from the case, she must’ve got out without incident, but Jessica decides to jump Erik’s sister on Malcolm, in exchange for the blackmail money Sallinger left.

It’s not all clear though as Malcolm’s presence is giving Erik a headache, likely because of the whole car crash thing, among other dirty deeds he’s done for Hogarth. Still, Jessica trusts him and that’s enough for the time being. They’ve linked several of his victims to missing persons but aside from evidence that they’ve attained illegally they have little to link him anything. Gillian tells Jessica and Trish to work through their issues and whilst I appreciate where she’s coming from telling them that good friends shouldn’t be thrown away, it’s a more difficult topic than that.

Meanwhile Hogarth is in for a nasty surprise. Peter didn’t attack the office, he went a different route, killing himself in the bathtub whilst calling out Hogarth’s defence of powered vigilantes, who he claims to be at her beckon call. Now the police want to have some words with Jeri, but she’s more interested in Kith’s feelings.

Jessica and Trish have it out and I gotta agree with Jessica, her head is jammed tight in her own ass. Jeri heads home but Kith is long gone, Jeri tries to call but is greeted only with “Stay away from me.” Jessica had nice sex with Erik that night and in the morning compares her photos of Erik’s place with Trish’s and noticing hers has a missing saw, likely used to make the body disappear. Jessica has an idea of how to proceed, but it requires Trish visiting a friend at the morgue

Peter’s protest death has lead to Hogarth’s firm haemorrhaging clients like nobody’s business. It’s not great for Malcolm either as Brianna’s pimp, the guy we saw earlier, Gor, arrives to take her away, he knocks Malcolm down. Sallinger finds a body part thrown through his window. It’s Jessica and Trish’s plan, he calls the cops when he sees Jessica, but it’s only a complaint about loitering so she’s soon on her way. Trish follows as he heads to dispose of the body part. They head to a trainyard and watch as he dumps the part in a disused tank. Jessica heads to check the tank, whilst Trish maintains her cover.

The tank’s half full with water so Jessica has to come to inspect it, she finds a lot of body parts but also manages to trip a booby trap Erik left, which pours some powder into the water. The air becomes difficult to breathe and Jessica can’t seem to punch her way out. Trish confronts Sallinger but he’s well aware of what’s happening with Jessica and says she has about 30 seconds left before the gas kills her.

Trish eventually relents on her pursuit and rescues Jessica, and they finally can have a heart-to-heart. The police arrive and Trish leaves, needing their anonymity. Erik returns home, feeling a pretty substantial headache which attempts to subside with booze. Sallinger attacks him and knocks him out.

Once again, the groundwork for several storylines are being laid. Hogarth’s arc got a bit more interesting and Malcolm is ready to play a larger role. Trish and Jessica have made up but their relationship has always been a bit rocky so we’ll see how long this lasts

AKA Sorry Face

The police have recovered all the body parts from the tanker, and Jessica’s word may be enough to get a warrant for Sallinger but you know, he ain’t stupid, he’s gonna have moved all the important evidence by the time they get there.

Either way, Trish wants to make a move early, but Jones warns her against it, not wanting their work to get him off on some technicality. Erik wakes up, gagged and with a bright light against his face. I think he’s been moved out of his room. You know Erik, you have the power to sense bad people, might be worth learning to fight them off.

Erik accuses them of cheating and not earning their powers. Not working for the results like he has to with all his degrees and whatnot. Hogarth’s called an emergency meeting and Malcolm can’t make it because it’s difficult to hide that scar. Zaya is tasked with checking in on Rand, their most valuable client.

Jessica arrives home after the ordeal and Malcolm explains what happened, she tells him where to look for her before calling Erik, discovering his predicament with Sallinger. But Erik isn’t defenceless either and has noticed a weakness in the chair that may allow him to cut through the tape binding his hands. Jessica heads to Sallinger’s apartment but is stopped by Costa. Jessica offers to trade the photos of the victims for the list of bodies from the trainyard, there’s only 7 whilst there were 8 victims.

Still, he ‘carelessly’ leaves behind the list as the first clue for Jessica to check. Malcolm finds Gor and beats him senseless, telling Brianna about Erik’s kidnapping and the two head back. Jeri is making her apology to Kith, but finds Laurant and the two have honestly a perfect exchange. Laurant is angry but he’s genuinely a good person. Jeri wants to make amends but her own baggage and ALS-related physical weaknesses make the ordeal more uncomfortable for her than it needs to be. It’s brief, but that’s perfect.

Jessica’s concerned that Trish is being rather blaze about the stakes of everything and she’s given an opportunity to do something about this as Dorothy is at the house. Jessica outs Trish as powered and that the experiments worked. Dorothy walks out on Trish, though this time I don’t know if I can pile it in the ‘Dorothy is an outright terrible human being’ column, much as it would give me great pleasure to do so.

She’s seen Trish on the edge of death one, let’s face it, multiple occasions now and she can’t deal with the idea of her daughter intentionally putting her life at risk like this. Trish brings up her emotional baggage and there’s a realisation that maybe the harm’s already been done.

Malcolm gets an ID on the missing victim, a chef and Jessica heads to check out his restaurant. Speaking of, Sallinger talks about his own motivations and Erik continues to cut away at the tape. He talks about his brother, Donny, and begins to have an epiphany about Erik’s powers.

Jessica pays the chef a visit, he’s still alive, apparently. He got out by kissing him. But it happened in his old kitchen. Erik eventually escapes and socks him, buying himself just enough time for Jessica to arrive with Trish. Jess and Trish manage to knock him out. But they’ve got a problem, the bodies have all come out clean, and Sallinger’s story and lack priors would likely be enough to convince a jury, without more evidence or testimony, the DA has passed.

Zaya and Jeri have managed to keep a number of Hogarth’s clients but the bad news train is about to roll in again with the arrival on Benowitz, they’ve managed to poach Rand. Danny being out of the country, wasn’t able to block this play by the Rand board. There’s some reconciliation between Erik and Brianna as Jessica pays a visit to Hogarth.

She tells her that if Erik testifies against Sallinger he’d at least go away for kidnapping and assault, but as a blackmailer, Erik would be out too and a lawyer could get him down to a year’s jail time. That’s a problem for someone like Erik who physically can’t be around that many bad people for that long.

Brianna tries to comfort Malcolm in his identity crisis, by providing him sexual pleasure. Lovely. Sallinger tells Jessica that Sallinger might just be getting started.

As a pair, these are the strongest episodes so far, but at 6 episodes in, we’ve still got a way to go with Sallinger which implies a lot more stalling.
